SWFL Gator Club awards $20,000 to local UF-bound students

For over 40 years, the SWFL Gator Club, a local chapter of the University of Florida Alumni Association, has contributed to scholarships that assist students in earning their degrees from the University of Florida. This year, the SWFL Gator Club awarded a record-breaking $20,000 to local students that will be attending the University of Florida.

Typically the club do-nates $10,000-$12,000 annually, but due to the harsh economic conditions that COVID-19 has created, the organization decided to double its community contribution from last year to award $20,000 in scholarships to maximize its impact. Funds were raised by their Second Annual Later Gator Poker Run as well as alumni donations during game-watching parties.

This donation will support 17 local students. Scholarship amounts vary between $500 to $2,000 and are renewable for up to four years to continue to support students during their academic journey. Students were selected based on their leadership skills, community involvement and financial need.

The SWFL Gator Club is ready to raise more funds for local students looking to attend the University of Florida in 2023 with their SWFL Gator Club Fall Kick-Off Party on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 5 p.m. at the Edison Restaurant. This free-to-attend event is open to the public.
