Cape High swimmers advance to state meet; Verot boys district champs in cross country

SWIMMING

Cape Coral’s girls and boys had swimmers advance to next weekend’s FHSAA Class 3A championships.

Aayden Dugan of the Seahawks qualified for state in two events. He won the 100 backstroke and was second in the 100 butterfly.  Reily Rountree was first in 1-meter diving and Hayden Tedhams second in the 100 freestyle.

The Cape Coral 200 girls medley relay team of Alejandra Figueroa, Taylor Tedhams, Isabella Figueroa and Daynna Franklyn was second in the 200 medley relay. Isabella Figueroa was also second in the 100 butterfly and Alejandra Figueroa second in the 100 backstroke. 

Only the top two in each event automatically advanced to state. The remainder of the state field came from the best results across all four Class 3A regions.

Cape Coral athletes earning wild-card spots in the state meet: 

Girls — Taylor Tedhams (200 individual medley and 100 backstroke), Alejandra Figueroa (200 individual medley), Daynna Franklyn (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle), the 200 freestyle relay team (Eva Scribner, Alejandra Figueroa, Alissa Varlam and Ava Romine); and the 400 freestyle relay team (Tedhams, Isabella Figueroa, Scribner and Franklyn).

Boys — Zachary Zivkovic (1-meter diving) and the 400 freestyle relay team (Hayden Tedhams, Carlos Heredia, Mackain Menassa and Dugan).

The FHSAA Class 3A Championships are Friday and Saturday in Ocala.

Class 1A

At Ocala

GIRLS

CROSS COUNTRY

Bishop Verot crushed the competition in the boys District 2A-6 cross country meet Saturday on the Vikings’ home course.

District champion Verot had five of the top six finishers, including Zachary Zielke (15:51.30) and Andew Marino (15:55.90) crossing the line in first and second respectively. Dennis Olsen was fourth, Zachary Engel fifth and Rafael Casillas sixth. Additionally, Thomas Eichten was 12th and Christian Ginart 14th, giving  the Vikings half of the meet’s top 14 times.

The Vikings’ 18 team points far outdistanced second-place Lemon Bay (86 points).

Truman Wiedner was 10th for Oasis, leading the Sharks into the Region 2A-3 meet as the sixth-place team.

Bishop Verot girls finished first and third. Mackenzie De Lisle came in with a time of 17:38.30 to take the District 2A-6 title from Oasis’ Jazlyn Forbes (17:44.00). Gyanna Gyurich (19:20.20) of the Vikings was third.

Aubrey Rogers eked out the title of District 2A-6 team champion, edging Oasis on a tiebreaker. Both schools had 57 points. Oasis’ first five bested the Patriots’ top five, but Rogers’ sixth runner was 22nd while Oasis’ sixth finished 29th. 

Bishop Verot finished third in the team standings.

Five Sharks were among the top 16 runners: Forbes, Madison Easton (12), Madison Brooks (13), Erin Vezzola (14) and Lilliana Sipe (16). Jocelyn Sweeney of the Vikings was 19th.

The top eight teams in each district advance to regionals.

The Region 2A-3 meet will be held next Saturday at North Port High School.
