Eagles soar into first place | FGCU women’s soccer top of ASUN
After claiming the top spot in the ASUN Conference late last week, the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team has yet to slow down.
A win in Fort Myers on Fan Appreciation Night, a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville, marked a third-straight for the Eagles, who have not lost since Aug. 16.
Sitting at 7-1-5 on the season, FGCU is 4-0-2 in the ASUN Conference, having scored 12 goals and conceded just six. FGCU is now the last remaining unbeaten team in ASUN Conference action.
In its most recent win over Jacksonville on Oct. 11, it was Keira Morgan who led the way for the Eagles as the sophomore netted two goals for her squad.
Morgan scored the first goal of the match in the 17th minute, and added the second shortly into the second half to break a 1-1 tie. FGCU’s Tessa Brooks netted her first of the year to make it 3-1, which was the eventual game-winning goal.
Morgan’s two goals played a large role in her being named the ASUN Player of the Week, as she contributed to four of the team’s five total goals in the past seven days.
Morgan’s big week started on Thursday when she recorded primary assists on both of the Eagles’ goals in a 2-1 win in a battle for first place in the ASUN standings against North Florida, followed by her pair of goals against Jacksonville.
“Keira was phenomenal today,” FGCU head coach Jim Blankenship told FGCU Athletics regarding her game against Jacksonville. “Two assists Thursday and two goals today, she has been really big up front for our offense. We didn’t play as clean as we could defensively, but any time you can pick up a result and three points against a good team like them, you will take it.”
The striker has worked her way into being a contributor for the Eagles, as she started the season as a reserve.
She has made her presence felt in a big way, having burst onto the scene as of late and currently leading the ASUN with six assists on the year while sitting third in the league in points with 12.
Morgan is the third different FGCU player to earn ASUN Player of the Week honors this season and is the sixth different Eagle overall to pick up ASUN weekly honors.
The conference-leading Eagles will be back in action this Sunday when they wrap up a home slate with a Senior Day battle against Stetson beginning at 1 p.m.
