Friday

Football

Cape Coral 21, Riverdale 20: The Seahawks sniffed out a fake point-after play, breaking up a pass with no time left on the clock. Riverdale had scored on the last play of regulation and opted to go for the win instead of playing overtime.

On offense, Derek Hooker powered the Seahawks (3-2, 2-0 District 5A-11) with two touchdown passes and a 9-yard run. Soldier Morse caught a short pass in the end zone, while TJ Schley was on the receiving end of a 49-yard TD pass.

One of Riverdale’s touchdowns came on a rare ruling by the officials. With the ball inside the Cape Coral 1, the Seahawks were penalized for offsides four times in a row. After the fourth flag, the refs gave the Raiders (3-3, 1-1) a touchdown.

Island Coast 7, Cypress Lake 6: The Gators held on for the win when Cypress Lake missed a potential tying extra point with only seconds to play.

Island Coast (2-3, 1-0 District 3A-13) took the lead just before halftime on a 5-yard pass from Dontavian Wilson to Jaziah DeJesus. Ben Rodriguez’s extra-point kick would prove to be the margin of victory for the Gators.

Cypress Lake is 0-5, 0-1.

Bishop Verot 63, Lely 7: This one was over well before halftime. It began with 42 points despite having just six first-quarter offensive plays. Champ Turner didn’t need offense to score, reaching the end zone on two interceptions and running back the kickoff to open the game. Ayden Gonzalez scored twice and Lem Jean-Baptiste adding a sixth TD before the first quarter ended.

Jean-Baptiste added a second-quarter touchdown run, and Hudson Peak also scored before intermission. Those scores started a running clock with most of the second quarter still to be played. Barron Rhone gave Bishop Verot its final score in the third quarter.

With the win, the Vikings are 3-1, 1-0 in District 3A-13.

Lely’s points came on a pick-six in the fourth quarter.

First Baptist 44, Ida Baker 7: Dominic Pena scored on a 3-yard run for the Bulldogs, who slipped to 3-3 in a non-district contest. Dominic Salerno intercepted three FBA passes, with one setting up Pena for the TD.
