The Southwest Florida community has the opportunity to support higher education for local youth and young adults via participation in an annual golf classic.

The Cape Coral Mayor’s Scholarship Fund will hold its annual Dollars for Scholars Golf Classic, presented by Nor-Tech, on Saturday, April 25, at Palmetto-Pine Country Club.

Proceeds from the annual event fund scholarships for Cape Coral students pursuing higher education, including technical, vocational, and four-year degree programs. The event brings the community together to invest in the next generation by helping students access opportunities that support their academic and career goals.

“The golf tournament is one of two big fundraising events we hold each year, so we appreciate community support and sponsorship,” said event chair and Cape Coral Mayor’s Scholarship Fund Vice President Charlie Pease. “The goal here with the golf tournament is typically to raise or to net approximately $25,000 toward our annual scholarships that we will provide to students who are residents in the city of Cape Coral. This year, I believe we’re going to award 21 scholarships.”

There will be 10 scholarships awarded to high school graduating seniors, and an additional 10 scholarships to current technical college students (Cape Coral residents who are attending Cape Coral Technical College, Fort Myers Technical College, and the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy).

Additionally, the Scholarship Fund will also award one additional designated scholarship for someone who is going into healthcare with the intent to either become a nurse or ultimately further their career path in healthcare.

Pease said that is a scholarship that is funded by Lee Health, in memory of Candace Smith, who was a long-time Mayor’s Scholarship Fund Board Member.

The amount of technical college scholarships have doubled this year.

“We really believe in supporting the students who are in those ‘career-in-a-year programs that are going to go straight into the workforce,” Pease said.

Participants of the golf classic can enjoy a day on the course and a great meal, all while contributing to a meaningful cause that directly benefits local students.

“The event is at a great venue and a really fun time,” Pease said. “We’ll have giveaways and drink tickets. After people get out there and have fun playing a round of golf on an awesome course, we’ll come in a have a luncheon event with raffles and more. We’ll have some fun games on different holes people will be able to play to help us with fundraising.”

The event kicks off with check-in at 7:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

The registration fee is $150 per player which includes the round of golf, practice range, a few drink tickets, lunch and other activities out on the golf course.

While the event is a great day out on the range, the cause is what’s most important.

“The Mayor’s Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit that’s run by an all-volunteer board that’s been an existence for more than 40 years here in Cape Coral and has given away nearly a million in scholarships,” Pease said. “This year, our goal was to give away approximately $60,000 in scholarships to Cape Coral residents and help them achieve their dreams and career goals.”

Established in 1982, the Cape Coral Mayor’s Scholarship Fund has now awarded nearly $1 million in scholarships to more than 600 recipients. High school seniors receive a four-year, $4,000 scholarship, while the technical school and academy scholarship recipients receive a one-time $1,500 scholarship.
