CROSS COUNTRY
Oasis won its first region championship Saturday as the girls had four runners in the top 12 of Saturday’s Region 2A-3 meet, including race winner Jazlyn Forbes. Madison Easton was fourth, Lilliana Sipe 10th and Madison Boyko 12th.
Forbes’ winning time on the North Port course was 18:31.60.
She did not compete in the District 2A-6 meet the week before. Forbes went into the weekend with the state’s best girls time for 2025 (17:02.44) at the North Port Invitational in late September.
Both the Bishop Verot girls and boys teams moved on to the state championship. The girls were sixth and the boys eighth.
Gianna Gyurich was third in the girls race for Verot, finishing in 18:43.50. Caroline Muddell was 20th and Lillian Lampitt 22nd.
Christian Ginart was the top Vikings boys runner, placing 19th. Thomas Eichten was 23rd.
The Oasis boys finished 10th, missing out on a trip to state. The Sharks’ best finishers were Adrian Sosa in 38th and Andru McCarthy in 39th.
The FHSAA State Finals are scheduled for Saturday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

FOOTBALL
Region 5A-3 playoffs
First round
Cape Coral 35, Gulf Coast 21: The Seahawks (10-1) struggled in the first half, then owned the second to move on in the 5A-3 playoffs. Gulf Coast led 21-7 after two quarters. A Jermaine Skinner TD run produced Cape’s first-half points. After intermission, Cape took over. Quarterback Derek Hooker connected on touchdown passes of 10 yards to Skinner and a fourth-and-goal 1-yarder to Ethan Wilson. After stopping Gulf Coast at the Cape 41, the Seahawks took the lead. Skinner connected with TJ Schley for a 59-yard score at the end of the third quarter. When a Gulf Coast drive stalled inside the Cape 10, the Seahawks locked down the win as Hooker hit his fourth touchdown pass of the night. Cape Coral earned a home game next week against Manatee in the Region 5A-3 semifinals.
Riverdale 47, North Fort Myers 22: North found itself in a 21-0 hole in the first quarter, came within 21-19 before halftime, then saw Riverdalle pull away. For the Red Knights, Christian Seber returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, JD Irons scored on a short run, and Adrian Rivera caught a 12-yard TD pass from Caedon Conn to account for North’s first-half points. Meyer Erickson kicked a field goal for the Red Knights (4-7) in the second half. Riverdale, the 5A-3 top seed, will be home against Immokalee next week.
Region 2A-3 playoffs
First round
Bishop Verot 22, Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian 14: The Vikings got a scare in the final minutes, but advanced to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs. Up by eight points, Bishop Verot (5-6) fumbled on its own 37. Justin Rode stopped Calvary Christian with an interception on his 10. Ayden Gonzalez scored on a 2-yard run, Miicah Anderson rushed for a 15-yard TD and Deshon Jenkins broke loose for a 42-yard score. Colton Lynch added a 25-yard field goal. Jenkins’ score made it 22-0 in the fourth quarter before Calvary Christian scored twice to cut the Vikings’ margin to what would be the final score. With the win, Bishop Verot advanced to face 2A-3 top seed and old rival Cardinal Mooney next Friday.
