Seahawks dominate Red Knights in season opener

Friday
FOOTBALL
Cape Coral 40, North Fort Myers 10: The oldest rivalry in the West Zone was one-sided Friday as the Seahawks rolled over the Red Knights. Cape Coral ate up big pieces of the field all night with nine gains of 20 yards or more. Among the chunk plays for the Seahawks was a 99-yard pick-six by Almirian Thomas. Jemaine Skinner had two touchdown runs, and Caleb Cobb rushed for a TD and scored on a pass from Derek Hooker. Freshman Briggs Conway had two field goals for Cape. North’s Christian Weber had a 2-yard scoring run as part of an 89-yard rushing total. The Red Knights had handed Cape Coral its only regular-season loss a year ago.
Fort Myers 30, Mariner 27: Just as it appeared that the Tritons had pulled off a stunning comeback win, the Green Wave got in the last stunner. Down 17-0 in the fourth quarter, Mariner had taken the lead with 14.3 seconds left on Jaxson Moore’s 27-yard touchdown. The Green Wave responded with a 70-yard Dominic Ardezzone pass to Bryson Golver on the last play of the game. Mariner began its 27-point fourth-quarter rally with a Roberto Resendiz pick-six of 35 yards. Eric David scored from the wildcat formation on a 15-yard run to make it 17-14. Fort Myers pushed their margin to 24-14 with under five minutes to play, but Mariner responded with a 50-yard TD catch by Steven Carter from Owen O’Leary. With less than two minutes remaining, a Fort Myers fumble set up Moore’s TD run.
Port Charlotte 62, Island Coast 0: Port Charlotte, which came within one game of the Class 4A Final Four last season, dominated the Gators in Island Coast coach Steve O’Neal’s debut.
Community School of Naples 49, Oasis 0: Any momentum coming from Oasis’ strong preseason game didn’t last long as the Sharks had a tough night to begin the regular season.
Tampa Jesuit 33, Bishop Verot 14: An early lead evaporated as the Vikings watched Jesuit put the last 33 points of the game on the board. Austan Cristiaann had two touchdown passes as Bishop Verot led 14-0 in the second quarter. Gavin Witttmer made a difficult catch for a 27-yard score, and Macrae Thompson pulled in a 10-yard TD pass.Thompson also led the Vikings with 99 yards rushing, 72 coming on one play.
