GIRLS WRESTLING

Host school North Fort Myers finished fourth in the Region 1A-3 meet Saturday behind runner-up finishes by Gabriella Sergi (125 pounds) and Melanie Lamb (135). Aniya Coffil (140 pounds) and Emily Dolittle (105) took fourth place in their weight classes, advancing to the state meet along with Sergi and Lamb.

Taylor Miranda (130 pounds), Cape Coral’s only wrestler at regionals, came in second and will also head to Lakeland for the championships.

The FHSAA Championships for both girls and boys will be in Kissimmee from Feb. 29 through March 4.

GIRLS SOCCER

Region 5A-3

The showdown is on for Wednesday after the top two seeds in Region 5A-3, Mariner and North Myers, won their semifinal matches Friday. At stake on the Mariner pitch will be a berth in the state Class 5A Final Four in DeLand.

The Tritons (20-3) rolled over Naples 7-1 in one semifinal, while the Red Knights (16-3) downed Parrish Community 3-1.

Ryleigh Acosta scored twice for the Tritons, one on a penalty kick, and made two assists. Mariner cashed in on an own goal when Kelsi Longabardi did a flip throw-in that the Naples goalie couldn’t handle. Stephanie Saracione scored on another penalty kick.

Eva Ramirez also had two goals and Carly Paz an assist.

Despite some solid chances, North was in a scoreless draw Friday until Gige Gerke scored on a free kick in the second half. Kenlee Dominguez made it 2-0, and Sophia Kerns added the third tally.

The Red Knights will be seeking to make amends for region final losses to the Tritons the past two seasons, while the Tritons will be seeking their third consecutive region championship.

In both 2022-23 and 2021-22, Mariner defeated the Red Knights for a Final Four berth. The Tritons would go on to win the 2021-22 state Class 5A title.

This year, Mariner downed North in the regular season 2-0, and 3-0 in the District 5A-11 championship.

BOYS WRESTLING

North Fort Myers grapplers captured five individual district championships on Friday, finishing second in the District 2A-11 team standings.

D’Angelo Gil (120 pounds), Justin Tobia (150), Julian Gonzales (165), Frank Cornelison (215) and Seth Tshiams (285) all won their weight classes. Abraham Alajarmeh (126), Kalel Hernandez (175) and Bret Formosa (157) were third. Avin Crawford (190) finished fourth.

Mariner was third, led by Camren French (126) and defending state champion Maximus Brady (132). Ryan Boos (106) was second, Mason Fox (138), John Arambasich (190) and Logan Ngo (215) third and Jonathan Semple (157), Keeron Perrin (165) and Clark Daley (175) came in fourth.

Judd Cole of Cape Coral won the 157-pound title. Isaac Towenko (120), Tyler Cherett (175) and Ezequiel Pedraza (190) finished second. Jeremy Velasco (113), Gavin Trevsiovsky (144) and Yonatan Druckman (165) were third and both Diego Delarosa (106) and Simon Prifti (285) were fourth.

Ricardo Villaquiran of Ida Baker was fourth at 126 pounds. Christopher Ponce of Island Coast (144) also finished fourth in his weight class.

At Bishop Verot High School

Oasis and Bishop Verot finished 3-4 in the 1A-12 meet Friday.

The Sharks got second-place finishes by Colin Anderson at 165 pounds, Frederick Harley Jr. at 190. Adrian Labash (126), Adrian Ross-Benninghoff (132), Kealan Clifton (150), Adrian Cauceglia (175) and Zachary Fox (215) all took third in their weight classes.

Bennett Sweitzer of the Vikings won his weight class at 175 pounds, Hudson Sweitzer was second at 106 and Ethan Sweitzer was second at 150. Edward Nolan also took first at 285 pounds.
