Cape, Mariner set up El Classico
It’s not Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, but Friday’s District 3A-13 championship game at Mariner is yet another “El Classico” soccer match in Cape Coral.
Cape Coral set up the city archival rematch Wednesday night with a 9-1 victory over North Fort Myers in the district semifinals at Mariner’s Tony McKenna Field. Mariner did their part in reaching the title match with a 6-0 win over Island Coast in the other semifinal match.
Jonathan Jimenez scored four goals to lead the Seahawks (19-2) victory and Camilo Avendano contributed four assists. Kevin Rentana, Andre Blanco, Christian Iturbe, Jose Parra and Jonathan Torres scored Cape’s other goals. Jimenez, Gianni Cognata and Iturbe all contributed assists.
Goalkeepers Steven Patino recorded two saves and Antonio Garcia-Castro one save for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks prevailed 3-0 in the regular season district match, so the Tritons (13-8-4) are looking to extract some revenge for that on Friday.
Eric Rivera tallied four goals for the Tritons, who scored three times in each half against the Gators. Jorge Nunez and Julian Gallego contributed the other goals while Joey Lane finished with three assists and Joseph Nizama two assists. Goalkeeper Nathan Eicher made one save to post the shutout.
The Seahawks lead the season series 1-0, but Barcelona leads the El Classico series with Real Madrid 105-87.
