City golf: A record field

4 min read

More players than ever before are entered in this weekend’s 26th City Championship golf tournament, topping even last year’s bulging field of 178 players.

A number of players had to be denied entry this week once the field limit of 180 players was breached. In fact, 184 had signed up before officials realized they were over the limit.

“There was a big rush at the end,” said Coral Oaks Golf Course golf director Allen Manguson. “We had to cut it off because there is only so much daylight. I took a lot of calls Monday, several from people who have played every year, and I had to tell them no.”

Manguson said a significant number of first-time entries were received this year during the sign-up period helping push the field to the all-time high.

Both the men’s and women’s defending champions are in the field for the two-day, 36-hole stroke play tournament Saturday and Sunday at Coral Oaks.

Jim Marcelak, who won the men’s championship division last year by one stroke, returns this year to defend his title. Women’s division champion Brooke Ciccone, who won by seven strokes last year, also returns to the field. The tournament consists of a total of six divisions.

An all-time high number of players also have signed up for Friday’s Pro-Am round.

“The Pro-Am field is full, too, and I had some trouble getting enough pros lined up,” said Manguson. “We’ve also gotten the most sponsorships we’ve ever had this year.”

The newest is RE/MAX Realty Team which donated $10,000 to become the title sponsor of the event. The company’s hot air balloon will be at the course and taking people aloft on Friday.

Also on hand will be representatives of the American Veterans Traveling Tribute Wall taking donations and selling T-shirts in support of the replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.

Pro-Am day would not be complete without the popular players’ barbecue. The tournament winds up with the awards banquet after Sunday’s final round.

Players should find the course firm and fast when they begin teeing it up as early as 7:45 a.m. for both rounds.
