Island Coast boys, Verot boys and girls basketball teams win district titles; North girls soccer team advances

District 4A-12

Championship

Island Coast 48, LaBelle 46: The Gators (17-10) upset top seed LaBelle (20-6) for their sixth win in a row and the school’s first district boys basketball championship. Island Coast has made the FHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2012-13. The 17 wins set a new school record, a remarkable turnaround for a Gators program that didn’t win a game back in 2021-22..The 2012-13 season was the only other time Island Coast has had a winning record (16-13)..

District 3A-10

Championship

Bishop Verot 63, Gateway Charter 51: The second-seeded Vikings (18-9) rolled past 19-8 Gateway Charter, ending a three-game losing streak against the Griffins in the process. Gavin Williams scored 26 points and Bryan Broomhead set a career high with 18 points. The district championship was the first for Bishop Verot since 2012-2013. That year capped a run of nine consecutive district titles for the Vikings dating back to 2004-2005.

Port Charlotte 71, Fort Myers 44

GIRLS SOCCER

Region 5A-3

North Fort Myers 3, St. Petersburg 3 (4-3 PK): The Red Knights (20-2) needed a shootout to advance to the region semifinals. North entered the match ranked third in the state in Class 5A. Jaelyn Hoefer scored twice and Hannah Busenbark scored in regulation, with Busenbark, Brianna Sullivan, Kenlee Dominguez and Megan Bergin scoring on PKs. North Fort Myers faces Braden River on Wednesday in the region final, with a spot in the Class 5A final four on the line.

Braden River 2, Mariner 0: Mariner (18-4), ranked fifth, was blanked by an undefeated (14-0-5) Braden River side, bringing an end to the Tritons’ year. Mariner had reached the regional final in each of the previous four seasons.

Semifinals

Osceola 1, Mariner 0: The Tritons came up short against 20-2 Osceola, ending the year 22-5. The loss was the only time this season that Mariner was shut out.

Championship

Bishop Verot 55, Gateway Charter 30: Cameron O’Halloran scored 27 points as the Vikings (18-7) claimed the district title for the third year in a row. Caroline Ward added 19 points.
