Breeze Athlete of the Month voting for September open
Voting for the Cape Coral Breeze Athlete of the Month for September is now open.
The Breeze had countless top performances from student-athletes in its coverage area throughout the September, and now it’s up to readers to decide who will earn top honors for the month.
Nominees for September include:
• TJ Schley, Senior, Cape Coral Seahawks: The Seahawk senior reeled in a pair of touchdown passes and also returned a punt 56 yards for a score in a 48-0 win over East Lee County.
• Ayden Gonzalez, Senior, Bishop Verot Vikings: The senior had a massive game for the Vikings, corraling seven receptions for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Gonzalez also added two rushing scores in a 59-0 win over Williston.
• Derek Hooker, Senior, Cape Coral Seahawks: The Seahawk quarterback went 19-for-26 through the air, passing for 304 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 26-20 road win over Dunbar.
• Tondrick Mack, Senior, Mariner Tritons: The Triton wide receiver reeled in 11 catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns to help Mariner defeat North Fort Myers 20-14.
• Caroline Hathaway, Senior, Bishop Verot Vikings: The Vikings are off to an 8-0 start with Hathaway being a major contributor. Hathaway leads the team in blocks and is an ace machine for her team.
• Skye Persechino, Senior, Oasis Sharks: The senior Shark had a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle, and four second-place finishes (100 backstroke, 25 freestyle, 400 mixed medley relay and 200 mixed freestyle relay) at the King’s Sentinels Showdown at Cypress Lake.
• Ryan Johnson, Junior, North Fort Myers Red Knights: The Red Knight quarterback threw for 113 yards and three touchdowns in a 46-43 win over Palmetto Ridge.
• Brooklyn Brown, Freshman, Oasis Sharks: The Shark recorded her first triple-double with 25 kills, 15 digs and 18 assists, while adding 6 blocks in a win over St. John Neumann. Brown leads the team in aces, blocks, assists and kills.
• Dominic Pena, Junior, Ida Baker Bulldogs: Pena rushed for a whopping 161 yards on just 14 carries in a 33-6 win over Bonita Springs. The junior also found the end zone twice for the Bulldogs.
• Cameron Hill, Sophomore, Oasis Sharks: Hill scored two touchdowns for the Sharks in a come-from-behind, 18-14 win over SFCHS, including what would be the game-winner. He rushed for 80 yards on 17 carries.
Athlete of the Month nominees are comprised of the Breeze’s staff-selected Athletes of the Week for that respective month.
