Newson not only hit the 1,000 point threshold in his young high school basketball career, but also set a North Fort Myers High School single-game record in the same game, dropping 69 points against Ida Baker. Newson is averaging 25 PPG this season.

“I just can’t describe it. There are too many emotions going on. I’m happy. I almost cried breaking 1,000 points. And then hitting 60-plus points. My grandma was here. It’s just an amazing moment. I’m just trying to be the best I can be at every given moment.”

The junior was tops in the 165-lb weight class at the Lee County Athletic Conference Championships for the Red Knights, who won the meet overall as a team. Gonzalez boasts a 34-0 record.

“I feel really encouraged about my record as I push to win a district title. At this point in the season, I’m just focused on winning my next match, knowing it’s the post season. I credit having good practice partners and a coach who’s always getting the best out of us has led to this point. There’s a winning culture established here, we don’t make excuses.”
