Kaylee Marburger of Ida Baker took fourth place in the FHSAA Championship girls individual competition.

Marburger made it to the quarterfinals before her first loss, then added a consolation bracket win before being eliminated in the consolation semifinals.

FHSAA champion Eden Bastian actually had the lowest four-round total of the top 10 bowlers, but rolled with the luck of the draw all the way to the title.

Football

Cape Coral 56, Mariner 13: The Seahawks are looking forward to the FHSAA region playoffs after dominating their archrivals.

The Black and Blue Bowl was all Blue this year as Cape Coral (8-2) jumped out to a quick lead and just kept going.

Caleb Cobb ran for a touchdown and Noel Devine Jr. caught a scoring pass from Derek Hooker, giving the Seahawks scores on their first two drives. Hooker added TD passes to Tim Schippel and TJ Schley in the second quarter.

The running game then took over, with Schippel, Devine and Schley all scoring touchdowns on the ground.

For Mariner (3-7), Jamarion Corbett scored on a pass from Alijah Touchstone and Tondrick Mack took a fourth-quarter kickoff back 96 yards.

Cape Coral reached eight wins for the third year in a row, matching the 1993-95 teams.

The FHSAA will release the playoff brackets Nov. 6.

North Fort Myers 51, Fort Myers 9: The oldest rivalry in Lee County gave the Red Knights a chance to end an up-and-down season with a smackdown of the Green Wave.

After taking some hard knocks during the year, North (4-6) ended its season with two lopsided victories. The Red Knights handed the Green Wave (4-6) their second losing season in a row for the first time since the 1960s.

Jadarian Brown, getting more touches this week, scored two rushing yards and totaled 146 yards. Ryan Johnson opened the scoring with quarterback Ryan Johnson setting up his short TD run with a 72-yard pass to Weston Lamb.

The North defense did its share of the scoring with a pick-six and Pedro Martinez getting a touchdown on a fumble recovery.

Johnson added a touchdown pass to Jerry Kemp, and Jonathan Rodriguez ran for a score.

Football

Ida Baker 35, Island Coast 8: The Crosstown Showdown went the Bulldogs’ way in a big way, with Ida Baker securing a winning record for the first time since 2013.

Ida Baker (6-4) got rushing touchdowns by Dominic Pena of 30, 2 and 1 yards. Pena had a monster game on the ground, piling up 234 yards rushing.

Quarterback Aiden Thurber scored two short touchdowns, the first set up by a fumble recovery and run by Ryan Lilie. Thurber added a two-point conversion pass to Caelum Cragin.

Gators quarterback Dontavian Wilson scored on a 2-yard run and added a 2-point pass to Terran McClendan to account for the scoring by Island Coast (4-6).

Jackson Caradonna of the Gators had 90 yards rushing.

Ida Baker will wait to see if it can make the postseason in the FHSAA Independent League for non-district schools. The Florida Invitational Tournament is also a possibility for the Bulldogs.

Either way, it will take some time before Baker knows its fate. Football has a week off while the FHSAA sets its various playoff brackets.

Regardless of whether or not Ida Baker gets into the playoffs, 6-4 is a big leap forward for a Bulldogs program that suffered 0-10 seasons as recently as 2023 and 2024.

Until this season, Ida Baker’s last winning year was 9-2 in 2013, with a 5-5 in 2019 being the only non-losing season since.

For Island Coast, coach Justin Midgett’s first season (4-6) was a big improvement from 1-9 the year before. The Gators were 2-1 in District 3A-13.

The Gators last posted a winning record (10-3) in 2014.

Oasis 13, Cypress Lake 3: Ashton Alverio passed to Sanjay Adlam for a touchdown, and picked up a bad snap on fourth and goal, scoring Oasis’ second touchdown.

Cypress Lake’s field goal following a blocked punt gave the Panthers an early 3-0 advantage, but the Sharks didn’t allow another point.

Oasis finished its regular season 8-1.

A non-district school in football, the Sharks could make the postseason in either the Independent playoffs or the Florida Invitational Tournament. Oasis played in the first FIT a year ago.

Palmetto 36, Bishop Verot 13: The Vikings slipped to 6-3 to wrap up the regular season, falling to a 9-1 Class 5A Palmetto squad.

Ayden Gonzalez caught a 16-yard scoring pass from Hudson Peak, and Robi Duclona ran for the other Verot touchdown.

Bishop Verot is assured a spot in the Class 3A region playoffs as the champion of District 3A-13. Despite three losses, the Vikings’ playoff seeding could get a boost thanks to a strenuous regular-season schedule.

Taylor Tedhams set a pool record in the 200 backstroke (59:23). Tedhams was fourth in the 200 freestyle, a race in which the top six swimmers all bested the pool record.

The Cape Coral 200 medley relay team of Isabella Figueroa, Hill, Tedhams and Daynna Franklyn came in first in another pool best of 1:49.37.

Cape’s 400 freestyle relay team of Tedhams, Eva Scribner, Figueroa and Hill came in second. The Seahawks’ 200 freestyle relay team (Alissa Varlam, Chelsie Best, Scribner and Franklyn) was third.
