Costco should not be getting a public-dollar subsidy

To the editor:

I am outraged by your recent article, “Council OKs $10M incentive for new Costco” (11-04-2026, front page).

Costco is a major presence in the American economy, with plenty of assets of its own. It has opened stores for years across America without any taxpayer assistance and has profited handsomely in doing so. Nonetheless, the Cape Coral City Council voted to gift this enormous sum of taxpayer money to induce it to come to Cape Coral. Frankly, we should be getting a percentage of its profits, because of this outright gift.

This is so wrong. Government has no place in the private sector, other than keeping us from killing each other and stopping robberies and fraud.

My party, the Libertarian Party of Florida, is dead-set against this kind of commercial bribery. Your readers should be, too.

Vote Libertarian.
