Days of Bush-era Republicans are done
To the editor:
Greg Wilson’s Oct. 8 letter urging Republicans to vote for David Jolly comes from a man who calls himself a principled conservative. With respect to his Treasury service, his kind of Republican is the reason so many of us went looking for leaders who would actually fight for us.
Principled conservatives don’t endorse a candidate who says, “I will be a pro-choice governor.” Jolly wants to replace Florida’s six-week law with abortion up to about 24 weeks. On guns, he told the Sun Sentinel, “I’m for an assault weapons ban, I’m for licensing, registration, and insuring.” As a Republican congressman, he said life begins at conception and voted for a 20-week ban. Now he says the opposite. That isn’t conviction. It’s convenience.
The Big Beautiful Bill kept the 2017 tax cuts from expiring and gave seniors a new $6,000 deduction. It also ended federal income tax on up to $25,000 in tips, a real raise for the servers and bartenders who keep Southwest Florida running. If Mr. Wilson is worried about debt, cut spending. Don’t raise our taxes.
The president also pulled tariffs off beef, coffee and bananas last November. And Florida’s governor doesn’t run the Pentagon.
What a governor can do is cut property taxes. Byron Donalds backs Amendment 3 and wants to go further for homeowners and seniors.
Old-school Republicans like Mr. Wilson had their turn. The days of Bush-era Republicans are done. I’m voting for Byron Donalds.
