Neighborhood speeds de ja vu

Mayor Gunter and City Council addressed lowering residential speed limits to 25 mph, today at City Hall.
Cape Coral’s Code of Ordinances (Sec.18 – 6) sets a general maximum of 30 mph on city streets. It also sets up to 60 mph on arterial or collector streets and framework traces back to Ordinance 108-00 (adopted Nov. 6, 2000).
In 2016, the City Council rejected this proposal in a 6 – 2 vote (to lower speeds to 25 mph). The traffic study found little safety benefit. In 2016, the cost of replacing hundreds of signs was estimated to be about $100,000. A spokesman for the Richard Leon campaign said, that Mr. Leon voted no to lower the speed limit.
This is common sense rationale.
Once again we have another “knee-jerk” reaction from our present mayor and crew. Identify the problem areas and use speed signs or extra patrol cars or other means to slow drivers down. Sure looks like another money grab from the mayor.
Keep this up and we’ll have a Flock camera on every corner.
