To the editor:

The July 2 Norman Cannon letter “The buck stops with the developer” was nicely done giving the lowdown on the illegality and penalties of the mangrove destruction committed on June 12 by contractors for Forest Development on the Seven Islands in Cape Coral. Forest claims to feel really bad this happened yet 24 days after the excavation of 600 feet of mangrove shoreline they still have not placed what I would consider the proper silt or turbidity control in this disturbed area.

Nine days ago I told Mayor Gunter about the lack of silt screen and turbidity curtain and the erosion problem and he said he would look into it.

Forest Development has said in the past that the city didn’t care about the preservation of the mangroves and it was their idea to save them with their design. It looks like all that talk was just blather. From what I can see, little has been done to control erosion, something that would constitute an ongoing federal clean water violation.

What the mayor was able to accomplish is getting re-election signs put up next to the mangrove desecration on the Forest property. Let us not forget the last time this type of violation occurred in this city it was while this mayor was on council and this city that was culprit. Looks like Forest is getting the wink and the nod from Gunter and crew.

The proposed NWNA shortcut through the mangroves guy also has signs on this deforested Forest property.

These two mangrove mashers need to get no further than the primary.

Dump Gunter for mayor and for sure a hard no on Mule.

Mr. Cannon concludes his letter “We certainly have enough problems without a developer flaunting any disregard for the law,” amen brother, same goes for elected officials and wannabe officials with myopic views on the environment.
