Fines, citations called for

To the editor:

Besides all of its other wonderful attributes, did you know that mangroves are one of the best trees at consuming carbon dioxide and producing oxygen?

Updating my previous comments, it has been announced that, once again, work at the Seven Islands development has been halted.

The available comments indicate that a way to refurbish the decimated shoreline is being sought.  But to date, nowhere does anything indicate that the developer will be cited. The seriousness of this type of violation is underscored by the state’s ability to impose a fine of $15,000 per day per offense.

Why should a developer be allowed to commit an act such as this without applicable charges?

Could this “oversight” stem from the fact that the City of Cape Coral was guilty of the same type of violation a few years ago?  In 2019, the city of Cape Coral was cited by the state DEP. They stopped the city in its tracks for four or more violations, including the destruction of mangroves. As with today, there has been no mention of criminal prosecution.
