Guest commentary: Moving Cape Coral forward
I was disappointed to read Tom Shadrach’s recent letter regarding my service on the Cape Coral City Council. While I respect every citizen’s right to express their opinion, I believe the residents of Cape Coral deserve facts, context, and leadership grounded in civility rather than political rhetoric.
First, regarding the May 6 council meeting, maintaining decorum and ensuring all citizens can safely and respectfully participate is one of the responsibilities of elected officials. Emotions understandably run high when discussing issues such as UEP assessments, but council chambers must remain orderly so every resident has an equal opportunity to be heard. Decisions made during meetings are not about silencing voices; they are about preserving a process that is fair and respectful for everyone in attendance.
As for public comment, council meetings must balance citizen participation with the need to conduct the city’s business efficiently and within established procedures. My vote reflected that responsibility, not disregard for public input.
Mr. Shadrach also criticizes votes related to assessments, budgeting, and the city manager’s evaluation. Leadership requires evaluating the long-term needs of our city, including infrastructure, public safety, parks, and financial stability. Not every decision is easy or universally popular, but governing responsibly means making decisions based on facts, fiscal realities, and what is best for Cape Coral’s future — not simply what is politically convenient in the moment.
Regarding the city manager’s evaluation, recognizing positive performance does not mean believing improvements are unnecessary. Cape Coral continues to face complex challenges, but we have also made meaningful progress in areas including economic growth, infrastructure investment, and city operations. Constructive accountability and collaboration are far more productive than constant political attacks.
Campaign promises matter, and I remain committed to responsible spending, transparency, infrastructure improvements, and ensuring taxpayers receive value for their dollars. I welcome honest debate and differing opinions, but I will continue to approach this role with professionalism, respect for residents, and a focus on moving Cape Coral forward.
The citizens of Cape Coral deserve leaders willing to work together to solve problems — not divide neighbors for political gain.
