Respect is a two-way street

To the editor:

As a Cape Coral resident since 1989 and over 32 years in the Army components, retiring as a Sergeant Major in Special Forces and a Purple Heart recipient veteran, I have always believed that respect for the public is the foundation of good leadership. That is why I am troubled by the way engaged citizens are increasingly being treated during City Council meetings under the current leadership on the dais.

Public comment is not a formality. It is one of the few direct ways residents can speak to those making decisions that affect their homes, finances, and future. When citizens feel rushed, dismissed, or removed for expressing concerns, it sends a message that their input is not valued. That perception, whether intended or not, damages trust.

In my experience, both in military service and in civilian life, the strongest organizations are built on listening. You do not have to agree with every speaker, but you do have to respect their right to be heard. When leadership appears impatient or defensive, it changes the tone of the room and discourages participation.

Civility matters, and it should be expected from everyone who steps up to speak. But that standard must be consistent. Elected officials set the example. When the response from the dais feels dismissive, it escalates tension instead of lowering it. Respect is a two way street.

Cape Coral is dealing with serious issues that directly impact residents, from infrastructure costs to growth and development. People are showing up because they care and their quality of life is being impacted. That should be welcomed, not managed as a disruption. Engagement is a sign of a healthy community, not a problem to be controlled.

We should expect more from our local government in how it treats the people it represents. Listening, patience, and professionalism are not optional. They are the baseline.
