The Lee County NAACP Branch 5110-B and Advancement Project, with Mt. Olive AME Church invites the community to “Access to the Ballot Box and Voting Rights in Lee County,” featuring civil rights attorney John Powers, Esq., on Sunday, Nov. 1.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive AME Church, 2160 Veronica S. Shoemaker Blvd. in Fort Myers.

“This timely discussion will address election issues affecting Lee County, including voting rights, access to the ballot, advocacy tools and resources, and community concerns surrounding open carry and armed security at polling places,” a release from the AAACP states. “Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about protecting their rights and strengthening community participation.”

Powers brings more than two decades of civil rights and voting rights experience, including service with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He also teaches civil rights at Howard University School of Law and American Political Process at American University Washington College of Law.

Advancement Project builds community power through law and policy, grounded in the belief that ordinary people can achieve lasting change. Its litigation and advocacy address voting rights, criminal justice, education, the school-to-prison pipeline, and public school closures.

The Lee County NAACP encourages residents, faith leaders, educators and community organizations to attend and share this opportunity throughout their networks.
