Each week through the General Election, The Breeze will ask the candidates for Cape Coral City Council an issue-related question. In the interest of fairness, each candidate is limited to the same amount of space, about 100 words, for their response.

Cape Coral City Council races are non-partisan races. Council members qualify in their respective districts but are elected at-large. This means all registered city voters may cast a ballot in each race regardless of where they live and the party to which they are affiliated, if any. This year’s General Election, on Nov. 3, features four Cape Coral City Council races: Mayor and the seats for District 1, 4 and 6.

The candidates below are running for the District 1 Cape Coral City Council seat:

Question of the Week: How will you serve the public as their representative on council?

• David Newton

I will serve with integrity, honesty, and an open mind. I will welcome public input and listen to the people, just as I have throughout this campaign when residents have invited me into their homes. For decades, I have served the public and listened without bias or prejudice. Even if you don’t vote for me, I will listen to you because your thoughts and concerns matter. I am asking for your trust and your vote so I can be your voice on council. Together, we can make sure every resident is heard, respected, and represented.

I will bring common sense to decision making and ensure the council makes decisions with financial analysis and disclosing all information to the public. I want to make the city manager’s office accountable for costs and schedules in everything we do. I want to bring trust back between the city council, city leadership, employees, and the residents. I want to increase citizen involvement by creating a volunteer Budget Oversight Committee, Utility Oversight Committee and Safety Review Committee. Also, any other committee that the residents would like to have. I want to change the city leadership culture from freely spending to finding cost savings.
