Election 2026 | Question of the Week 14, District 1 | Where do you see the city in 5 years? In 10?
Each week through the General Election, The Breeze will ask the candidates for Cape Coral City Council an issue-related question. In the interest of fairness, each candidate is limited to the same amount of space, about 100 words, for their response.
Cape Coral City Council races are non-partisan races. Council members qualify in their respective districts but are elected at-large. This means all registered city voters may cast a ballot in each race regardless of where they live and the party to which they are affiliated, if any. This year’s General Election, on Nov. 3, features four Cape Coral City Council races: Mayor and the seats for District 1, 4 and 6.
The candidates below are running for the District 1 Cape Coral City Council seat:
Question of the Week: Where do you see the city in 5 years? In 10?
• David Newton
In five to 10 years, I see Cape Coral continuing to be a great place to live, raise a family, and call home. I see a beautiful Yacht Club that our citizens can be proud of, one that preserves its historic character without becoming a financial burden on taxpayers. I see a financially responsible city that respects every tax dollar and avoids unnecessary spending. I want Cape Coral to remain one of the safest cities in the nation, while restoring trust in local government through transparency, accountability, and open lines of communication with the people we serve.
• Tom Shadrach
I want Cape Coral to remain affordable. I want our property values to remain steady with growth paying for growth. Within five years I would like to see our Yacht Club and Pier complete. I would like to see an amphitheater operational at Festival Park. I would like to see that we have a grant program in place that will cut the cost of the UEP to residents in half. In 10 years, I would like to have the UEP program well on the way to completion with homesteaded residents paying less taxes and assessments than we are today.
