CCPD: Driver facing DUI charges after driving into canal
A man was arrested in Cape Coral over the weekend after police say he drove into a canal while under the influence.
Carson Williams, 29, was charged with DUI and DUI property damage following an incident on Sept. 18.
According to Cape Coral Police Department officials, officers were deployed throughout the city from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. on a DUI enforcement detail.
Police officials state that during the operation, dispatch received a report of a reckless driver on Chiquita Boulevard, but that officers could not find a vehicle matching the description of the car in the area.
“Moments later, dispatch received a report of a traffic crash involving a vehicle that had entered a canal near the 2900 block of SW 17th Avenue,” a release from CCPD states. “The vehicle description matched the one provided in the earlier reckless driving call.”
CCPD officials said a witness reported seeing Williams behind that wheel, and that an officer was able to safely remove him from the car.
“As officers conducted their investigation, they observed multiple indicators of impairment, including bloodshot and watery eyes, a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech,” the release states. “Williams was asked to participate in standardized field sobriety exercises.”
Williams was arrested and charged, and his two breath samples provided registered a blood alcohol content of .218% and .205%, police said.
“The Cape Coral Police Department reminds drivers that impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk,” CCPD officials stated. “Officers will continue to focus on identifying and removing impaired drivers from Cape Coral roadways.”
Williams has since been released from Lee County Jail on a $3,500 bond.
