Cape Coral begins changing speed limit signs on residential roads
Those driving along neighborhood streets in Cape Coral need to slow down.
The city announced Tuesday it will begin changing speed limit signs to 25 mph, urging motorists to watch for the signs and to adhere to the new, lower speed limits.
Proactive enforcement is planned.
“During the installation process, Cape Coral Police officers will issue warnings to drivers who exceed the new 25 miles per hour speed limit,” city officials stated in the release. “The City will issue an additional public notice when the warning period ends, and the 25 miles per hour speed limit will become enforceable through citations.”
Citing safety concerns, community poll results and a speed data study, city staff recommended reducing the speed limit on neighborhood roadways from 30 mph to 25 mph in July.
Cape Coral City Council approved the recommendation via unanimous consensus vote.
City staff then presented the elected board with three options, each of which had a cost for new signage for the reduced speed limits.
The first option was for citywide sign replacement at an estimated cost of $57,719; second option was for the “neighborhood gateway” at a cost of $52,403; and the city gateway, the third option, for the “city gateway was for $49,038.
The council chose option one, which will replace 807 signs.
“The goal is to improve roadway safety and support a safer environment for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists,” Tuesday’s city release states.
Motorists are used to use caution while the signage work is underway.
“Residents may notice City crews working along roadways during the implementation period. Drivers are asked to use caution when approaching work areas,” city officials said.
