Council approves contract for wall at RO plant
Cape Coral City Council approved a $2,310,445 contract for the North Reverse Osmosis Facility perimeter wall construction project Wednesday.
The contract is with Coastal Concrete Products, LLC for $2,100,405 with a 10% city-controlled contingency of $210,040.50.
Utility Director Jeff Pearson said the expansion of the North RO Water Treatment Plant increases the gallons from 12 million to 18 million gallons a day.
As part of the project, the construction of an additional 12 million gallons for ground storage tank is included.
A wall was originally called for in the project development – the planned project development in 2006 – around the north government complex to house the two facilities.
“The North RO plant was completed around 2010, around the same time a lot of projects just stopped at that time,” Pearson said. “That was one of them.”
The wall will provide sound reduction, as generators have to run if power goes out, making them good neighbors. In addition, the wall will provide a higher level of security.
“It’s going to provide construction screening,” Pearson said of the “activities going on over the next four or five years with the construction of the new water reclamation facility.”
The wall will run 6,450 linear feet.
Councilmember Rachel Kaduk, who pulled matter off the consent agenda for discussion, asked why the wall will come before the expansion construction.
“It will have gates where the construction vehicles can get in and out of,” Pearson said. “You have to put up some kind of screening — having the wall there before that will actually help us rather than hurt us because we get a lot of complaints because it is pretty much in the middle of the residential area.”
