Lee County Parks & Recreation transitions Variety Club to two recreation center locations
North Fort Myers Rec Center to offer program designed to serve adults 18 and older who have a disability
Lee County Parks & Recreation is transitioning its Variety Club program to two recreation center locations beginning Sept. 8 as part of ongoing efforts to enhance program accessibility and community integration.
Previously offered exclusively at the Karl J. Drews Community Center, the program will no longer be available at that location and will instead be offered at North Fort Myers Recreation Center, 2000 North Recreation Park Way, North Fort Myers, and Estero Recreation Center, 9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd., Estero.
“The transition is designed to bring programming closer to families while increasing opportunities for recreation, inclusion and community engagement,” county officials said in a release. “Participants will also have access to additional recreation center amenities and activities outside of Variety Club programming hours.”
Variety Club serves adults ages 18 and older who have a disability and who are no longer in school. The program is offered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $20 per month. Transportation is not provided; participants needing assistance may contact LeeTran Passport at 239-533-0300.
Registration for the September session starts Monday, Aug. 17. Interested participants should contact their preferred recreation center to begin the registration and approval process. A one-time $10 lifetime Lee County Parks & Recreation membership is required.
As part of the transition from the Karl J. Drews Community Center to Lee County recreation centers, Fun Days and Spring Break Camp will no longer be offered there.
“Participants are encouraged to register at their nearest Lee County recreation center, where they can engage alongside their peers in an inclusive environment with appropriate accommodations and support,” the release states. “Families should note updated age eligibility guidelines. Fun Days and Spring Break Camp offered at recreation centers follow standard age requirements, with a maximum age of 13.
