Cape man facing grand theft charges
A Cape Coral man was arrested after police say he stole more than $1,000 worth of a popular brick building set by scanning barcodes for cheaper products.
Tyler Lovering, 33, has been charged with grand theft following a months-long investigation by the Cape Coral Police Department. CCPD said in a release that its Property Crimes detectives determined that from February through April of 2026, Lovering repeatedly used barcodes from lower-priced items to purchase more expensive LEGO sets at reduced prices.
Police officials said the stolen sets ranged from $23.97 to $261.97, with the barcodes Lovering used scanning in between $4 and $4.97. Sets reportedly included themes from “Frozen,” “Harry Potter,” and “Star Wars.”
“The scheme occurred more than 12 times and caused a total loss of $1,354.61,” CCPD officials stated in the release. “Detectives determined the stolen LEGO sets were being kept at Lovering’s residence and in a storage unit. Following a search warrant, detectives recovered an array of stolen LEGO sets. While searching Lovering post-arrest, detectives recovered barcodes from his wallet.”
As of Friday morning, Lovering had been released from Lee County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
