A Cape Coral based tree care provider is launching a community tree replacement initiative in the Cape.

Following recent public discussions surrounding the removal of oaks along Cape Coral Parkway as part of ongoing roadway improvement efforts, Joshua Tree Inc. is launching an initiative designed to help reinvest in the future beauty and sustainability of Cape Coral’s urban canopy.

The initiative, called the “Tree Replacement Initiative,” will provide professionally installed native replacement trees for the first 33 qualifying homeowners impacted along the affected corridor.

“We believe great businesses have a responsibility to contribute more than just the service they provide. They should help strengthen the communities they serve,” said owner of Joshua Tree, Joshua Hill. “We understand why residents feel emotional about the recent tree removals. Mature trees become part of the identity, beauty, and character of a neighborhood. But we also understand the reality that as cities grow, infrastructure must evolve to support long-term public safety, roadway functionality, drainage, and future growth.

“As professional arborists, we saw an opportunity to help move the conversation forward in a positive and productive direction. Rather than simply performing contracted work and walking away, we wanted to reinvest back into the community by helping homeowners establish sustainable native canopy for future generations.”

The removal of 33 trees along Cape Coral Parkway sparked broader public discussion around a concept Joshua Tree’s certified arborists have long emphasized: Planting the right tree for the location instead of the wrong tree in the wrong place.

Joshua Tree’s officials explained that many of the trees removed along the corridor were species planted decades ago in spaces that were no longer capable of supporting their mature size alongside modern infrastructure improvements, including sidewalks, utilities, drainage systems, and roadway expansions.

“In arboriculture, we often refer to this as ‘wrong tree, wrong place,'” Hill explained. “A tree can be healthy and beautiful, but still become incompatible with the environment surrounding it as communities grow and infrastructure evolves. Proper species selection and long-term planning are critical to creating a sustainable urban canopy.”

“That does not make the trees bad trees,” Hill said. “In many cases, they simply outgrew the environment they were originally planted in. This is why proper species selection, spacing, and long-term planning matter so much. Our hope moving forward is not only to help restore canopy where appropriate, but also to serve as a long-term arboricultural resource and trusted advisor for the community.”

As part of the program, Joshua Tree Inc. will purchase and professionally install one native 25-gallon replacement tree for each approved applicant. Participating homeowners will be able to choose alongside an arborist from a curated list of Florida-friendly native species selected for long-term sustainability, site compatibility, and urban resilience.

Eligible homeowners will be able to apply directly through the Joshua Tree Inc. website.

Joshua Tree Inc. says the initiative is not designed to revisit infrastructure decisions that have been in planning for years, nor to contribute to division or controversy. Instead, the company hopes the partnership can serve as an opportunity for community collaboration and long-term stewardship.

Joshua Tree’s team will evaluate each property to ensure:

• Proper spacing exists for long-term tree health

• The selected species is compatible with the site

• Utilities and infrastructure are protected

• The planting supports sustainable canopy growth for decades to come

“We want residents to know that we genuinely understand and respect the passion people have for these trees,” Hill said. “That passion reflects the pride people have in their community, and we believe that is a positive thing. Many of these infrastructure projects have been in planning for years and are intended to support the city’s long-term safety and growth. These decisions are rarely simple, but they are often necessary as cities and communities evolve.”

Joshua Tree Inc. also hopes the initiative helps increase public awareness surrounding proper arboricultural planning and the importance of species selection in urban environments throughout Southwest Florida.

“Our role extends far beyond simply removing or planting trees,” Hill added. “We want to serve as a long-term arboricultural resource and trusted advisor for the communities we work in.” Giving back to the community is part of Joshua Tree’s culture. Working with organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Tim Tebow Foundation, Salvation Army, Crow Animal Clinic, Gulf Coast Humane society, anti-human trafficking organizations, and many various local charitable partnerships have been ongoing for years.

Backed by over 50 years of combined ISA-certified and Board Certified Master Arborist experience, Joshua Tree Inc. is committed to enhancing the safety, beauty, and longevity of residential and commercial landscapes throughout Southwest Florida.
