The Cape Coral Museum of History is calling on the public to assist in an upcoming exhibit that will pay homage to 250 years of independence for the United States.

The museum is looking for residents to photograph American flags flown in Cape Coral — from local car dealerships and businesses, to ones flown in front yards.

The photos will contribute to a mosaic representing the American Flag as part of the future exhibit. The museum is seeking 250 photographs, each symbolizing a year in America’s history.

Cape Coral Museum of History Executive Director Janel Trull, said the exhibit is to be titled “Salute to America — 250th Anniversary”.

“The exhibit will briefly tell the story of 10 different significant events in our country’s history and how the American flag was present at and used during each event,” she said. “It highlights the symbolism and importance of our flag and what it has meant to the country and its citizens over the last 250 years. The exhibit is a unique way to celebrate 250 years of American history by looking focusing on one of our country’s most important symbols.”

The museum is asking submission to include a separate photograph featuring the photographer and any companions who helped capture an image of the flag; this will also be included in the exhibit.

Wendy Schroder in the process of creating the exhibit, with the hopes to have a preview reception on July 1 which will be by invitation. The Schroder Fund for the Preservation of the History of Cape Coral is the sponsor for the event.

As for how the museum came up with the idea of getting the community involved, Trull said, “We love having the community involved in everything we do, and this exhibit is no different. July 4th, 2026, is a momentous event, as the United States of America turns 250 years old. By having the public help us commemorate the occasion, they have a role in not only the celebration but their photographs become a record of history as well.”

The temporary exhibition will be on display as part of a regular museum tours starting in July and will run through the end of the year exact dates to be determined).

Photos can be emailed to info@capecoralmuseum.org between now and Flag Day, on June 14.
