Lee County Commission approves agreement for safety improvements to Burnt Store Road
Improvements include paved shoulders and rumble stripes
The Lee Board of County Commissioners voted today to approve a project authorization to add safety improvements to a stretch of Burnt Store Road from Delilah Drive north about five miles to Vincent Avenue.
The improvements include:
• Four-foot-wide paved shoulders on both sides of the road
• New right and left turn lanes at Caloosa Parkway
• Rumble stripes on the edge of pavement and center lines
• Required guardrail, roadway signs and pavement markings
The $3 million agreement is a new task work order to an existing contract with Ajax Paving Industries of Florda LLC, which was the lowest competitive bid. Work is expected to begin in June and be complete in about nine months.
The project will install safety measures along the remaining two-lane section of Burnt Store Road without impacting the eventual four-lane widening project for that segment.
Previously, Lee County DOT completed three widening projects along Burnt Store Road:
• Van Buren Parkway to Diplomat Parkway was completed in January 2018.
• Diplomat Parkway to south of Tropicana Parkway was completed in April 2020.
• Tropicana Parkway to Pine Island Road was completed in early 2021.

The next step in the widening project is identifying funding. Widening this section of Burnt Store Road is a Tier One Lee County DOT Priority Project for the Lee Board of County Commissioners:
• Burnt Store Road is a critical north-south corridor, and the segment in discussion connects with U.S. 41 and Interstate 75.
• Widening Burnt Store Road will address projected travel demand as well as accommodating area-wide growth.
• The widening and addition of multimodal amenities will enhance safety by continuing the features delivered on the previous phases of the widening project.
• The road project will help during emergency evacuations.
