The South Cape Redevelopment Agency continues to have forward movement with code enforcement compliance, according to a presentation given Wednesday.

Case Officer Jeffrey Colon said a total of 108 code enforcement cases were opened in March and April. The majority were violations of health and sanitation — 49 cases — and sign violations, 31 cases.

The sign violations included “A frame signs” left out after business hours, general maintenance and lack of sign permitting, he said.

When secondary violations were discovered, such as unpermitted structures on property, they were turned over to the building division for further enforcement, Colon said.

Of the 108 cases, 93%, or 100, were successfully complied and closed.

Of the cases, 95 were made by the code officer, six were from sweeps, three from citizen complaints, two from city workers and one from 311 and anonymous.

Cape Coral City Council sits as the CRA Governing Commission and the city manager, Michael Ilczyszyn, acts as its executive director.

“We have heard in other meetings and venues, the only way that violations and codes are addressed and taken care of, is by citizen report and complaint. When you consider the fact that we had open cases of which 95 of them, the absolute vast majority is by proactive patrolling and addressing by our code enforcement officer,” said Councilmember Bill Steinke said. “We are paying attention and going out.”

Steinke said the number of closed cases shows that people are responding well to the education Colon is providing and the willingness to change once they know the rules.
