Florida Highway Patrol State trooper rescued a dog that had jumped into a Cape canal Thursday and then could not get out.
The trooper, who FPH identified only as Trooper Ogden, observed an apparently lost Malinois running south on the sidewalk of Del Prado Boulevard near Southeast 15th Terrace. The dog ran down Southwest 16th Street, darted between houses, and the jumped into a salt water filled canal FHP officials said in a release, adding the trooper, concerned for the dog’s wellbeing, was able to locate it in the canal where it was whining.
The trooper located some rope and quickly made a makeshift slip lead to assist the dog to a floating dock area. While attempting to help the dog onto the dock, the trooper took a tumble into the canal as well.
“It all ended wet, but well, as the Trooper was able to safely remove the dog from the canal, transported it to a vet clinic for an examination and bath,” the release states. “The vet clinic and the trooper are taking good care of the dog, temporarily named “K9 Valor” for bravery displayed while facing adversity.”
Lee County Animal Control was also notified.
“Another reminder out that our State Troopers are always ready… whether it’s protecting people or saving those with paws!,” officials said.
