JP Sports Collectibles to host Free Comic Book Day
Cape business takes part in ‘global event’ annually; 8 free books available this year
Southwest Floridians can spring into action this weekend, as a Cape Coral store that offers all things hobby-related is taking part in a national initiative and giving away free comic books.
JP Sports Collectibles in the Cape once again will take part in Free Comic Book Day this Saturday, May 2, where every patron can take home eight free comic books across the entire operating day, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
JP Sports also is offering a myriad of deals that day, including 65% off comic book back issues from 2025 and older, as well buy one, get one free on CGC graded comics.
There is also an ongoing sales event running parallel to Free Comic Book Day, which sees 50% off the entire NHL and NBA section.
“We’ve been hosting this global event since 2021, and it just keeps getting bigger and more exciting every year,” said JP Sports Store Manager Jonathan Powell. “For the first time, Free Comic Book Day comics came from distributors other than Diamond. Universal Distribution and Lunar Distribution are sharing their stories, and Penguin Random House is also increasing the fun with several Comic Giveaway Day options. With over 50 different stories to choose from, this is the biggest Free Comic Book Day event on record.”
Powell added that JP Sports finds joy in seeing not only diehard customers come in, but also first‑time visitors, readers, and curious newcomers who want to be a part of this truly extraordinary event.
“It only happens once a year and who doesn’t love free comics, giveaways, and all‑day sales?” he said. “It puts a smile on everyone’s face and creates memories our community will never forget.”
Free Comic Book Day falls the first Saturday in May, and comic book lovers have this date circled every year as if it’s their Christmas. This year, JP Sports is offering eight free comics per customer, but it doesn’t end there. JP Sports wants its customers to also fill their collections, which is why it is offering an unprecedented 65% off comic book back‑issue sale for issues from 2025 and older.
“Comic book fans will get free comics, can return weekly on Wednesdays to see how those stories end, and have the ability to fill or complete their ongoing collections at an incredible savings,” Powell said. “During an event like this cosplay is common, it gives you an opportunity to let loose, and enjoy this incredible event with other people who love all the same things you do.”
Powell said often times, attendees find a new hobby, such as Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic: The Gathering, One Piece and so much more on the TCG side of things.
Perhaps the most important thing about Free Comic Book Day is it creates new fans, and can also be a hobby for a parent to share with a child.
“This event gets not only kids back into reading but also adults,” Powell said. “It’s never too late to pick up a comic book and fall in love with a story. We’re so used to in today’s world being stuck on a tablet or on our phone, but there is a magic in reading. Kids, teens, adults can all pick up a story they’ve never seen before on television and immerse themselves into a world and fandom they never dreamed was possible or never knew was out there.”
JP Sports has cultivated a positive and welcoming atmosphere for sports lovers, comic book enthusiasts and card connoisseurs for over 32 years.
“We have an atmosphere that is genuine and unlike anything you’ve experienced before,” Powell said. “You parent may have brought you to our Merchants Crossing shop 30 years ago to collect the new Spider-man comic that came out -now you can share that moment with your children in the same shop — just in Cape Coral now -where your love for comics all began.”
JP Sports will be giving away a giveaway bag every hour, on the hour, for the entire day. The event will run a full 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. workday.
Powell said customers who haven’t seen the store in a while will notice some big changes happening in the layout, showcasing the future of what is coming in 2027.
