Two members of the Cape Coral Rowing Club took the gold at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association’s annual Sweep State Championship Regatta held Saturday and Sunday at Nathan Benderson Park.

The two, Sofia Mayus and Brooke Bunch, competed in the Women’s Pair event in Sarasota County.

On Saturday afternoon, they won their heat with the fastest time in their event to qualify them for the Grand Final on Sunday morning. In an exciting final, the CCRC women came from behind to take the gold medal, winning the club’s first-ever State Championship.

Sofia Mayus resides in southeast Cape Coral, attends Bishop Verot Catholic High School, and will row at Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall.

Brooke Bunch resides in northwest Cape Coral, attends Bishop Verot Catholic High School and will study pre-med at the University of Florida this fall, where she plans to join the women’s crew.

“We are so proud of these girls and their amazing accomplishments!!!” said Saundra Weston, CCRC president and youth coach.
