Cape BMX team headed to Australia to compete in world championships
A large group of Cape Coral BMX riders have qualified to take part in an international competition this summer.
Fourteen members of Cape Coral BMX have qualified to represent Team USA at the upcoming Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) BMX World Championships in Australia this July.
More than 3,000 riders from around the world are expected to compete on the 400-meter Brisbane BMX Racing Track at the Sleeman Sports Complex. Four exciting days (July 22-25) of racing will bring together amateur riders from all over the world vying for glory in their respective age categories.
“We’re incredibly proud to see so many Cape Coral riders qualify for the World Championships,” said Cape Coral BMX spokesperson Sydney Murphree. “It really speaks to the level of talent and dedication we have right here in our community.”
Riders who have qualified include Crosby Backer, Jimmy Bellin, Tyler Grable, Glenn Lugo, Sawyer Murphree, Alexa Pearl, Jacob Shearer, Gavin Stevenson, Brandon Unger, Isaac Valentin, Ivan Valentin, Davis Walker, Conor White and Lisa White.
Murphree added, “We’re also honored to have been one of only two U.S. hosts of world qualifying events this year. Our facility is something special, and that’s a direct reflection of the hard work and passion of our volunteers, parents, and riders who make it what it is every single day.”
The qualifiers were recognized at a recent Cape Coral City Council meeting.
In a social media post, city officials stated, “This incredible accomplishment reflects the dedication, talent, and hard work of these athletes — and highlights the strength of our local BMX community.”
