Those missing the tennis courts at the Yacht Club Park may soon see another neighborhood option.

Cape Coral City Council approved a $408,186 contract with Sports Surfaces, LLC Wednesday for tennis courts at Veterans Park.

Veterans Park is at Coronado Parkway, just east of Del Prado Boulevard.

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said when city staff was looking at the design and concepts for the Yacht Club rebuild, tennis courts were discussed. Options included adding the courts or relocating two of the four tennis courts being removed from the Yacht Club to another park in District 1.

He said The Courts have provided for some of the community-based functions of the tennis courts.

“Some residents said we are not into men’s and women’s tennis leagues, or doubles leagues,” Ilczyszyn said, adding that they were looking for recreation tennis within the neighborhood.

The idea was to replace two of those tennis courts at Veterans Park to make up for the loss to residents in the southeast, Ilczyszyn said.

As part of the contract, the basketball courts already there will receive a refresh, as well as lights for the tennis and basketball courts.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said he will remain committed to have athletic facilities south of Cape Coral Parkway. He said he does not want people to take lives into their hands by crossing Cape Coral Parkway.

“Even though we are putting tennis courts at Veterans Park, I still believe our Yacht Club community deserves to have those tennis courts replaced after losing them at the Yacht Club. I will remain committed to looking to see something in the plan to replace them near the Yacht Club are,” Steinke said.
