Have a code violation?

Expect a bright yellow sign in your front yard.

The city of Cape Coral has begun using new Code Enforcement Yard Signs this week “to improve transparency, as well as informing residents when Code Enforcement is actively addressing a violation.”

According to the Office of Code Compliance, the new signs are in addition to the standard Notice of Violation letters mailed to property owners. The signs are intended to encourage faster compliance, promote fairness and accountability, and indicate where the city is acting on confirmed violations, city officials said.

“The signs will be placed after a code violation has been confirmed and it’s determined that the issuance of a formal

Notice of Violation is warranted,” the Office of Code Compliance said in an email in response to a Breeze query. “Posting the notice at the property helps expedite the compliance process by initiating the official timeline immediately, rather than waiting for certified mail delivery.”

The sign will have the Notice of Violation attached to it, which lists the violations currently being investigated and the steps required to remedy the violation(s) within a reasonable timeframe.

The signs, which the city began posting this week, will help the city maintain safe, clean, and attractive neighborhoods, officials said.

The Notice of Violation is attached to the sign, listing the violations currently being investigated and the steps required to remedy the violation(s) within a reasonable timeframe.

The city was asked what happens if the homeowner removes the sign.

“Once a homeowner receives a Notice of Violation via the posted sign, they are free to do with it as they choose,” the city responded.
