Lee County Domestic Animal Services said this year’s Clear the Shelters event was an “overwhelming success.”

During the one-day adoption special, 64 cats and dogs found their forever homes with families.

“We are thrilled with the response from our community,” said Director Pablo Adorno of the event, which was held Saturday, Aug. 23. “Every adoption represents not just a new beginning for that pet, but also a lifesaving opportunity for others still waiting in our care.”

Clear the Shelters is a nationwide initiative aimed at finding homes for shelter animals through fee-waived or reduced-cost adoptions. This year’s event in Lee County brought in hundreds of adopters eager to provide homes, helping to reduce the shelter’s population and making space for new arrivals.

While the event was a tremendous success, Lee County Domestic Animal Services reminds the public that it is the stray-intake facility for the entire county, so new pets arrive at the shelter daily. Dogs, cats, puppies and kittens continue to need homes. The community is encouraged to keep adoption in mind year-round.

Adoptions take place at the shelter, 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers. All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go home. Adoption hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Adoption applications can be submitted electronically at www.leegov.com/animalservices/adopt. They can also be printed and faxed or brought to the shelter. Or they can be completed in person.
