Lee County Parks & Recreation to host National Public Lands Day volunteer events
In celebration of National Public Lands Day Saturday, Sept. 26, Lee County Parks & Recreation will host a series of free, family-friendly volunteer workdays at preserves throughout the county.
The events begin at 9 a.m. and offer opportunities to give back to local public lands while enjoying the outdoors. Space is limited at each site and advance registration is required. Sign up by Sept. 24.
Volunteers are required to wear closed-toe shoes and long pants and are encouraged to bring work gloves, sun protection and drinking water.
Volunteer projects will take place at:
• Lakes Park (7330 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers): Removal of non-native invasive vegetation. Volunteers are encouraged to bring loppers or hand saws. No motorized equipment. Limited to 15 participants.
• Moody River Preserve (866 Moody Road, North Fort Myers): Fence removal and removal of non-native invasive vegetation. Volunteers are encouraged to bring leather work gloves, hammers and loppers or handsaws. No motorized equipment. Limited to 20 participants.
• Oak Hammock Preserve (2200 Carter Lane, Alva): Removal of non-native invasive vegetation. Volunteers are encouraged to bring loppers or hand saws. No motorized equipment. Limited to 20 participants.
• Wild Turkey Strand Preserve (11901 Rod & Gun Club Road, Fort Myers): Beautification efforts in the public use area.

Volunteers should wear clothing suitable for painting. Limited to 20 participants.
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands, promoting environmental stewardship and encouraging communities to connect with nature.
