FSW to host annual ‘The Battle of the Buccaneers’ public speaking competition

By Staff | Mar 25, 2024

Florida SouthWestern State College announces the return of its annual public speaking showcase, The Battle of the Buccaneers. The fourth annual competition, taking place on Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m. in Rush Auditorium on the FSW campus, continues to highlight the exceptional talent and hard work of FSW students in mastering the art of oration.

“We are excited to feature The Battle of the Bucs at our annual Spring Research Expo this year, where they will wrap up our first day of events,” said Wendy Chase, Ph.D., Director, Honors Scholar Program & Center Undergrad Research & Creativity. “The Battle of the Bucs has always been one of the liveliest and most anticipated student events of the year, and it is high time we showcased our students’ public speaking skills alongside the research and creative projects.”

This year’s esteemed panel of judges includes FSW English Professor Jeremy Pilarski, Incubate Debate Coordinator Yurit Santos, and special guest J. Webb Horton, ESPN announcer and Assistant Director of Community Based Admissions, FGCU.

The competition adopts an “American Idol Style” feedback approach, with judges providing valuable insights to each speaker post-presentation. Winners will be chosen for first, second, and third places, with prizes of $200, $100, and $50, respectively.

In addition to the competition, the event seeks to engage the broader community by allowing the audience to vote for their favorite speaker, who will receive a special gift card. Attendees will also have the chance to win door prizes, including more gift cards, and enjoy complimentary refreshments like pizza and drinks.

Come for an afternoon of compelling speeches, insightful feedback, and community spirit. For more information, please contact Jamie Votraw at 239-489-9448.
