‘Steel Magnolias’ coming to Pine Island Playhouse

2 min read

In the early 1980s, a young man named Robert Harling lost his best friend, his little sister, to diabetes. Finding it very difficult to cope with her death, his friends advised him to write about his feelings. A short story soon emerged which led to a full-length play originally staged Off-Broadway in 1987, then traveled abroad to win the hearts of London, evolved into a film with a star-studded cast in 1989, then made its Broadway debut in 2005, and now has landed in the lap of Pine Island.

“Steel Magnolias” is an all-time favorite. Whether you’re a “Steel Magnolias” junkie or you’ve never experienced the stage play before, you won’t want to miss this production.

Director Nichole Pichon has put together a stellar cast including several of Pine Island’s best female actors. Together they bring warmth, life and love to Shelby, M’Lynn, Truvy, Annelle, Clairee and good ol’ Ouiser in such a way you’ll feel like a regular at Truvy’s Beauty Shop and “one of the gang.”

This comedy-drama is rich in all the things you look for in entertainment wit, brilliant dialog, interesting characters, complex relationships, captivating story line and heart wrenching truths. It is no wonder that the play is as popular as ever.

Steel Magnolias runs May 20 and 21, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m., at the Pine Island United Methodist Church located at 5701 Pine Island Road, N.W., Bokeelia.
