City announces process to detect home water leaks
Designed to help customers ahead of unexpectedly higher water bills
The city of Cape Coral has implemented a new automated notification process to help utility customers identify potential water leaks and involuntary water use.
Customer Billing Services, in collaboration with Information Technology, recently launched the system, which contacts customers by phone or email when continuous water consumption is detected at their property. This week, notifications were generated for more than 2,000 locations.
The alerts give customers an early warning, so they can investigate potential issues before they lead to unnecessarily high water bills. Common causes of continuous water use may include running toilets, leaking faucets, irrigation systems, or other plumbing issues.
Customers who receive a notification can contact Customer Billing Services at 239-574-7722 for troubleshooting guidance or visit the City’s Utilities and Bill Payment FAQs webpage at https://www.capecoral.gov/departments/financial_services/customer_billing_services/utilities_bill_payment_faqs.php for tips on identifying potential causes. When appropriate, the city may also dispatch a Field Service representative to verify continuous consumption at the water meter and help identify possible sources.
The new service is part of the City’s effort to help customers identify problems sooner, reduce water waste, and avoid the financial impact of undetected leaks.
