The city of Cape Coral is warning residents and contractors about a fraudulent email scam impersonating the City’s Planning department.

The scammer sends an email that appears to come from “City of Cape Coral Planning and Zoning Commission,” using the subject line to reference an “application approval” and sending the message from a non-government email address.

These scams often use free domains such as “@usa.com” to appear official. Similar fraudulent activity has been reported targeting municipalities nationwide. The emails are designed to look legitimate and are sent directly to residents and businesses.

Residents are advised to:

Avoid clicking any links or downloading attachments in suspicious emails.

Verify sender addresses carefully. Legitimate City departments will not send messages from “USA.com” domains.

Contact the City directly and do not use any contact information provided in suspicious emails.

For questions about rezoning applications, contact the City’s Zoning Team directly. Call 239-574-0553 or email zoning@capecoral.gov .
