Home ‘a total loss’ following fire
An early morning fire caused serious damage to a Cape Coral home Tuesday morning.
Cape Coral Fire Department firefighters responded to the 4:15 a.m. call in the 2200 block of SE 15th Street.
Arriving crews found flames coming through the roof of the home.
Two adults, two children, and a dog were able to safely escape thanks to working smoke alarms that alerted them to the fire.
“Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and prevented it from spreading beyond the area around the garage,” CCFD officials stated in a social media post. “However, due to the extent of the damage, the home is considered a total loss.”
Preliminary findings indicate the fire likely started in a shed outside the home before spreading into the attic, CCFD officials said.
The exact cause remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“While this family experienced a devastating loss, the outcome could have been far worse without working smoke alarms,” CCFD officials continued. “This incident is a powerful reminder to install smoke alarms on every level of your home and inside and outside every sleeping area. Test them monthly, replace the batteries as needed, and replace the alarms according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Working smoke alarms save lives.”
