For many families, navigating the school enrollment process, along with getting a physical/medical appointment for a physical in a new area, can be challenging.

Lee Health invites the community to attend back-to-school enrollment physicals with heart screenings and enrollment support this Saturday, July 18, at Next Level Church.

Students in need of physicals and heart screenings can do so between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., at 3637 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Fort Myers. The event will include physical examinations by Lee Health, EKG screenings from Who We Play For, and student enrollment support from the School District of Lee County.

Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Second Chance Act, which requires an EKG for Florida student athletes who are incoming 9th graders and any student in grades 10-12 who has never participated in an FHSAA-sanctioned sport. This requirement starts in the 2026/27 school year.

An EKG/ECG performed on or after July 1, 2024, will satisfy this requirement.

Electrocardiogram screenings are an effective way to identify potential heart risks such as arrhythmias, which can be fatal during intense activity. This painless, noninvasive test uses electrodes to measure heartbeat and detect abnormal rhythms or structural issues.

For back-to-school physicals, parents should bring any forms for healthcare providers to complete, their child’s immunization records, a list of all medications (prescription and over-the-counter), and glasses or contacts if used. The physicals include a comprehensive exam: height, weight, vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure), ear and throat checks, vision screening, musculoskeletal assessment, and review of allergies, skin issues, nutrition, medications and medical history.

Student physicals will be available on a walk-in basis during the event. To register for EKGs, please visit whoweplayfor.jotform.com.
