The recovery community is gathering to begin its work towards identifying community needs locally to combat substance abuse issues and help provide long-term sustainable recovery.

More than 30 organizations, both for profit and non-profit, will be represented at the Recovery Community Organization Symposium, bringing together many different sectors, niches and advocates of recovery to address the needs of the local community.

The Recovery Community Organization Symposium is being held at Summit Church, 19601 Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, Fort Myers, Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“I’m just trying to bring more recovery resources to Southwest Florida and help unite the ones we have to better serve the community.” said Robert Rabb, program director of Nextep. Rabb and Nextep have been instrumental in bringing the Recovery Community Organization Symposium to Southwest Florida after visiting an RCO in a another area and seeing how it could be beneficial locally. “I believe in recovery and just really want to help those still struggling.

Through public education, policy advocacy and peer-based recovery support services, the RCO aims to increase the prevalence and quality of long-term recovery.

William C. Moyers of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation will be the keynote speaker for the event. Commentary of the RCO’s importance will be provided by Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson, Chief David Newlan from Cape Coral Police Department, Dr. Aaron Whol from Lee Health and more. Cafe Conversations will be facilitated to bring to light the immediate needs of the community.
