Traffic light may not be needed at Coral Lakes

By MEGHAN BRADBURY - | Jan 9, 2024

The first Cape Coral City Council meeting following the elected board’s winter hiatus will include an ordinance for Coral Lakes Subdivision this Wednesday.

The ordinance would amend a previous one for the planned development project Sunset Lakes, also known as the Coral Lakes subdivision. Approval of the elimination of .49 acres from Tract 4 would remove “any obligation to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Del Prado Boulevard and the north entrance to Sunset Lakes.”

According to the ordinance summary, the applicant has requested to eliminate the near half acre at 3100 Del Prado Blvd. from the Coral Lakes Planned Development Project.

“The PDP designation for this tract is commercial, however, the site has future land use amendments and a rezoning, along with a PUD under review to develop the tract as residential. Removing this tract from the PDP would also eliminate the requirement for a traffic light to be constructed at the entrance to Coral Lakes,” the backup documentation states.

Tract 4 was part of the Coral Lakes PDP was approved as part of Ordinance 71-03.

The PDP allows for 275,000 square feet of commercial development, however Tract 4 has undergone subsequent Future Land Use and zoning amendments.

“Tract 4 has Multi-Family Residential (MF) future land use designation and 24 acres has a Residential Planned Unit Development (RPUD)

zoning designation and the remaining 10 acres is subject to a rezone to the RPUD district,” the backup documentation states.

In other business:

• A public hearing will be set for Jan. 24 regarding travel expenses and auto allowances within the city travel policy. The ordinance to be considered would repeal and delete the majority of the verbiage in the current ordinance, with the exception of the provision for an automobile allowance, allowing the city manager to establish such an allowance for certain city employees.

“At the City Manager’s discretion, he or she shall be authorized to establish a fixed monthly automobile allowance for directors of each of the administrative departments established pursuant to 2-1.2 of the City of Cape Coral code of ordinances for use of a privately-owned vehicle on official business. The funds shall be allocated in the annual budget approved by City Council.”

The 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, meeting will be held in City Council Chambers 1015 Cultural Park Blvd. City council meetings are open to the public.
