Harry Harrison Shaffer Jr

By Staff | May 31, 2023

Harry Harrison Shaffer, Jr. of Cape Coral, FL died May 27, 2023. Harry passed away after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer. He was surrounded by Fire Department paramedics who gave Chief Shaffer appropriate passage to join his dance partner, Libby, his wife of 64 years, who pre-deceased him in 2018.

Harry is survived by his sister, Vera Jacqueline (Jackie), three daughters, Sue Shaffer, Kay Shepardson, and Ann Zabriskie, as well as seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, with the eighth due to arrive in August.

Born on a farm just north of Baltimore MD, Harry grew up riding horses, served in the Navy, and graduated from the University of MD. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth Drenner Kline (Libby), at a Sadie Hawkins dance in 1947, and they were married in 1952. Harry’s favorite pastime was dancing with Libby throughout their 64 years together. They enjoyed a rich and fulling life together, living just outside the Washington DC area for many years. Harry retired from the D.C. Fire Department as second in command after 28 years of service, when they retired to Florida in the late 80’s. Tennis, bridge, dominoes, and boating were some of their favorite past times. They spent their later years at Gulf Coast Village, where they built a close community of friends who supported Harry after Libby’s passing. Harry will be missed tremendously by all who knew him.

A Memorial Service in Harry’s honor will be held at Gulf Coast Village in Cape Coral on Saturday June 3, 2023, at 1:00 pm.
